Characterization and ecotoxicity evaluation of chitosan/tripolyphosphate nanoparticles loaded with different essential oils
Essential oils (EOs) are botanical products extracted from medicinal and aromatic plants, which are
constituted by volatile hydrophobic compounds exhibiting varied biological activities such as
biopesticidal properties1. Chitosan is a polysaccharide with cationic nature and high potential to
encapsulate natural ingredients. Electrostatic interactions between the cationic chitosan (protonated
amine groups) and polyanions like tripolyphosphate (TPP) can be considered as an efficient
polyelectrolyte complex to encapsulate EOs2. Therefore, the objective of this study was to encapsulate
Anethum graveolens, Coriandrum sativum, Satureja montana and Thymus vulgaris EOs into
chitosan/TPP nanoparticles via the ionic gelation technique. The particles encapsulating the EOs were
characterized regarding their physicochemical and structural properties through DLS (Dynamic Light
Scattering) and UV-vis spectroscopy during 30 days of storage. A first screening of the ecotoxic potential
of the formulations was performed through the Microtox Test using the bioluminescent bacteria
Aliivibrio fischeri. Nanoparticles with average sizes ranging from 188 to 210nm and surface charge
between +28 to +35 mV, respectively, were physically stable throughout storage at 4ºC. The EOs
encapsulation efficiency (EE %) was high for the 4 EOs tested (86 to 97%). Despite having less toxicity
than EOs loaded nanoparticles prepared from a concentration of 4.76 mg of EO/mL, empty chitosan/TPP
nanoparticles (4.76 mg/mL of chitosan) also showed some toxicity through the Microtox Test. Other
ecotoxicity tests will be carried out to assess the nanoformulations´ potential hazard towards different
non-target organisms. Chitosan/TPP nanoparticles are a suitable, stable, and high-efficient nanocarrier. This work was supported by the Foundation for Science and Technology (FCT) through a PhD research grant with the reference UI/BD/151043/2021.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio
Criminalidade transnacional
The increasing development of corporate criminality, whilst social reality that requires the urgent intervention of the punitive system, forced the Criminal Law to adapt its structure in order to recognize legal persons as criminal agents, therefore abandoning the classic provision societas delinquere non potest. This operation, because of its complexity and particularly due to the concepts and theories designed by the criminal science and highly rooted in our legal order, demands an additional effort and labour on part of the doctrine in an attempt to establish the institute of corporate criminal liability upon solid basis.
The structure of modern corporate organisations, defined by a remarkable complexity and dimension, represents itself the main obstacle to the achievement of the primary goals of Criminal Law, allowing those organisations to constantly evade their criminal liability due to a dissipation of responsibilities based on the commitment of material acts of the criminal execution by the subordinates within the corporate structure, incapable to express themselves a corporate will and therefore bind the organisation.
In this scenario arises the answer given by the paragraph b) of number 2 of article 11 of the Portuguese Criminal Code, relying on the duties of surveillance and control of the people with a leading position within the corporation as key factor to attribute to these legal persons the conducts of its subordinates and allowing the justification of its liability in a domination of the organisation for the execution of the crime. It is therefore crucial to proceed with a densification, interpretation and articulation of the concepts provided by this article 11, in order to promote the completeness and adjustment of the solutions there presented in the fight against the crime that finds in this legal persons its main actors
No abstract.

Ohmic heating as an innovative approach for the production of keratin films
Ohmic heating is a thermal processing method based on the application of electric fields directly into a semi-conductive medium. In this study, we explored for the first time the use of ohmic heating to obtain keratin films. The properties of the films prepared by ohmic heating and conventional heating were evaluated and compared under similar thermal profiles. A lower increase in free thiols' concentration was obtained for the keratin solutions and keratin films submitted to ohmic heating (16% increase for the keratin solution extracted from virgin hair, pHâ¯9, submitted to ohmic heating and 23% when submitted to conventional heating). Significant differences in the swelling results were observed for the films prepared with keratin extracted from virgin hair, with a swelling decrease in about 55% for the films prepared by ohmic heating. Generally, the keratin films obtained by ohmic heating showed distinct properties comparatively to the films produced by conventional methods. The application of a fusion protein on the keratin films demonstrated their capacity to be used as substitutes to hair fibers when evaluating the potential of new cosmetic products. This work suggests that ohmic heating show potential to tailor keratin films properties depending on an intended application or functionality. This study was supported by the Portuguese Foundation for Science and Technology (FCT) under the scope of the strategic funding of UIDB/04469/2020 unit and BioTecNorte operation (NORTE-01-0145-FEDER000004) funded by the European Regional Development Fund under the scope of Norte2020 - Programa Operacional Regional do Norte. A collaborative approach for spam detection
Electronic mail is nowadays one of the most
important Internet networking services. However, there are
still many challenges that should be faced in order to provide a
better e-mail service quality, such as the growing dissemination
of unsolicited e-mail (spam) over the Internet. This work
aims to foster new research efforts giving ground to the
development of novel collaborative approaches to deal with
spam proliferation. Using the proposed system, which is able
to complement other anti-spam solutions, end-users are allowed
to share and combine spam filters in a flexible way, increasing
the accuracy and resilience levels of anti-spam techniques.(undefined
Using Computational Approaches in Visual Identity Design: A Visual Identity for the Design and Multimedia Courses of Faculty of Sciences and Technology of University of Coimbra
Computational approaches are beginning to be used to design dynamic visual
identities fuelled by data and generative processes. In this work, we explore
these computational approaches in order to generate a visual identity that
creates bespoke letterings and images. We achieve this developing a generative
design system that automatically assembles black and white visual modules. This
system generates designs performing two main methods: (i) Assisted generation;
and (ii) Automatic generation. Assisted generation method produces outputs
wherein the placement of modules is determined by a configuration file previous
defined. On the other hand, the Automatic generation method produces outputs
wherein the modules are assembled to depict an input image. This system speeds
up the process of design and deployment of one visual identity design as well
as it generates outputs visual coherent among them. In this paper, we
compressively describe this system and its achievements.Comment: Paper presented in 10th Typography Meeting "Borders", 22--23 Oct.
